Those are words that I never thought I would ever think. But little did I know, that the day I thought everything was going to be normal, was the day that things were going to change.

It all started that day. It was a Saturday afternoon, and Ryan and I were planning to meet up. Ryan and I just got together, and so far things have been great. I liked Ryan a lot, and he seemed to understand me. We did get stares on occasion, but most people acknowledged our relationship.

I liked him a lot, but things have been slow. We had sex once, but we didn’t want to rush too fast into the relationship. He didn’t like the idea of running into that sort of thing, he had a problematic relationship in the past. I could acknowledge it, but it was still weird at times.

We planned to meet up at the park today and then go for a walk. It was my off day, and I was excited to hang out with him. It’s been going smoothly, but when I got to the park I didn’t see him there.

“This is weird,” I said. I looked around, but he still wasn’t there. After a little bit, I saw his silver sports car pull up to the parking space and sit there for a moment. Ryan got out, and when he saw me he smiled.

“Hey there Alice. How are you?” he said.

I blushed when he pressed his lips to mine in a chaste kiss. Neither of us were completely comfortable with making out just yet. We didn’t like public displays of affection for some reason. But it was nice to feel his lips against mine. We stayed like that for a moment, but then he pulled away. He grabbed one of my dark-skinned hands and looked into my chocolate-brown eyes.

“How are you?” he asked.

“Pretty good. I was just waiting for you. Where were you?” I replied. I didn’t like to be left hanging, and normally he wasn’t like this.

“Sorry about that. I had to finish up something at my job. They called me in today even though I asked them not to. Damn corporate scumbags,” he replied.

I knew that feeling. I mean, I worked as a legal secretary for an up-and-coming firm. We started taking on bigger cases, but my boss told me that even if we took on more, they would still give us the weekend off. So far, they’ve fulfilled their promise. The question however, was how long they would do that.

“Damn that sucks. Well you’re here now. I turned my phone off so I won’t get any messages from anyone. I just want to have a lovely time with you today,” I replied.

“Same here. Now let’s make that wish into a reality.”

I nodded as we started walking around the park. There were people around, but most of them minded their own business. Some people probably wondered why a white man like Ryan would be dating a black woman like me. Everyone has their own tastes though, and that’s what I said whenever I got questioned. Ryan was a charming guy, and when I looked into his green eyes I felt mesmerized. He was a bit taller than me, and he was muscular. He looked yummy whenever I looked at him, but I was too awkward to do anything about it.

“So what do you think we should do today?” he asked.

“Why don’t we walk around, talk for a bit, and then get some dinner together?” I replied. We were already by the lake, which was a giant pond that people walked and biked around. I loved coming here, but when I was with Ryan I felt happier here.

“That sounds great babe. So, do you know if you’ll be able to take off that one day for the picnic yet? I know that the shop really wants to meet you. I’ve told them only good things about our relationship, and they’re all true. They also want to see what type of a girl a guy like me can bag,” he asked.

I was supposed to go to this fall picnic thing that Ryan’s work was having. It was on a Friday, but I planned to make up the time. I didn’t know how I was going to make it up yet though.

“I really don’t know. I mean, it would be awesome to do so. I would love to meet the guys that you work with. But it’s so close to a case that I’m not sure the firm would let me off. Of course, if I do well the next couple of weeks, I might be able to request it off,” I replied.

“Well I would love to have you there. Also, I got you a tiny present. It’s nothing much, but I felt like getting you something,” he stated.

He stopped walking and looked at me, giving me a small box. When I opened it, I saw that they were two necklaces with our names written on it in Chinese characters. They were beautiful, and it was sentimental. I smiled as I looked at the jewelry.

“Thank you so much Ryan! They’re beautiful,” I stated.

“You’re very welcome Alice. I know that you love stuff like that, so I felt it was only natural to give you something that you would cherish,” he replied.

I put it on and he put his on. The stone with the name on it was in the shape of a heart, and I loved the way that it looked. I have always wanted to travel to the Orient, and I actually know how to speak Chinese. That’s why I knew what this was when I read it. The fact that he took the time and effort to make something like this for me was amazing.

I gave him a kiss. I rested my lips against his for longer than I have before. Normally, we didn’t have overly public displays of affection, but this time I felt happy. He pulled away after about thirty seconds though. I blushed at my actions; normally we never did stuff like that and it was a bit awkward for me right now.

“S-sorry about that,” I said.

A Woman Turned paranormal BWWM romance“It’s all good. I didn’t mean to pull away so suddenly. I was just surprised, that’s all,” he replied.

I nodded. We went back to walking once again, both of us making small talk with the other. I wanted to get my mind off of my foolish action, but it continued to wander over in that direction.

We talked about our interests, both of us learning more about the other. This was only the tenth date that we’ve been on. We’ve only been together for about two months, but I had to admit that it was nice so far. We didn’t spend a whole lot of time together because of work schedules, but when we did it always felt refreshing to have him around. I guess that’s what happens when you start dating someone while working a full-time job.

Ryan was the first real relationship that I’ve had. I did have a few flings in college, but most of those were just trivial and didn’t last more than a couple weeks. I didn’t want them to last back then, I just wanted to have a bit of fun and then move on to the next one. I never had a relationship that lasted as long as this one has. So far, it’s been pretty good.

We walked and talked for another couple of hours. When we got back to the parking lot, the sun was setting. It was a beautiful night, and I had to admit it was peaceful to be with him.

“I love doing this. It’s relaxing to have an amazing woman like you around,” he said. He placed his hand in mind. I grabbed it, but I was still nervous about everything. I didn’t know what to think about all of this, but I liked it.

“I had a great time today as well. I love park walks,” I replied.

“That’s good. I guess we can walk over to the restaurant then. It’s just down the street,” he replied.

I agreed. I liked that we didn’t have to take a car everywhere. I only liked taking cars when I needed to. I was more of the “go green” type of person. I wasn’t crazy about it like some people, but I still supported it. We walked down the street, the restaurants getting busier by the second. It was a Saturday after all.

“Damn, there’s a ton of people,” I said.

“Sure is. Don’t worry though, I’ll make sure we have a great place to sit for dinner,” he replied.

Ryan was a gentleman, and that was part of the reason why I liked him. There was something about him that made me excited, and the fact that he knew how to treat a lady interested me even more. Maybe that’s why I never connected with guys in college. They were all too busy trying to be boys and not men. Oh well, their loss.

We went up to a small seafood place that didn’t have a large turnout at the moment. So far, it seemed peaceful and I liked that. The host saw we were ready and serviced us right away. We were seated at a booth that overlooked the waterfront. Ryan smiled as he grabbed my hand from across the table.

“You know, seeing your beautiful eyes make me happy. I’m glad that we’re able to do this,” he said.

“Same here. I’m just happy that you were able to get out of work. I was worried that they wouldn’t let you go for some reason,” I replied.

“Don’t worry. Even though they might be mad right now, I scored a deal with another company that will blow their mind. This auto parts company saw how stellar our service has been, and they were excited to partner up with us. I’m just happy it’s all going so well,” he said.

“I’m glad too. It’s amazing how we’re both doing well in life. It might be normal, but at least we’re both happy,” I replied.

I was happy. I mean, I had a good job that paid the bills and then some. I also had a great boyfriend that I was starting to grow even fonder of. I didn’t think it was love yet. Plus, I didn’t think I wanted to be in love yet. I felt like it was too much too fast, and I didn’t want to screw myself over because of it.

I was worried about being in love, to be honest. I thought that if I was in love, it might mean sacrificing a part of myself in order to make another person happy. I didn’t know if I could do that just yet, and although I wanted to, I didn’t think it was the right idea for me. I wanted to take things slow and see where they ended up.

The waiter came by and got our drink orders. He also got our food orders as well. I got some sort of fish, while Ryan got the calamari. It looked interesting, but I don’t think I could eat something like that. While we waited on the food, we talked for a bit. We spoke of different things, from stuff that we saw in the news to personal tastes in music. It was fun talking to him, but towards the end of the waiting period for our food, I started to feel like I was running out of things to say. I was worried about it, but I decided to shrug it off. I didn’t think anything bad was going to happen. I just felt like we talked about everything that we needed to, and now we were enjoying the company of each other’s silence along with the small talk.

When the food came, I breathed a sigh of relief. I dug into my food, the conversation minimal for the time being. We were both hungry, so we didn’t have to do a whole lot of talking. It got me thinking though, if this was the right thing. I mean, I did feel happy with the way my life was going, but something seemed odd. It was as if there was something missing that wasn’t coming to light.

What was it though?

I mean, I was happy and everything. I don’t know, maybe I’m just overthinking things again.

The rest of the dinner was nice, but before we left I ran to the bathroom. When I got out, Ryan was gone. What the hell?

I was frustrated to say the least. I thought he would at least stick around to walk me back to the car. I turned on my phone and sent him a text asking where he was. After a minute or so, he texted back.

Sorry for leaving so suddenly. I had to go back to work. They called because an emergency happened and they need me to fix it.

Damnit.

I texted a simple “K” back to him and locked my phone. I can’t believe he would just leave me like that! The nerve of some people…

I wasn’t going to let it affect me though. Everyone wasn’t perfect, and I know that he was just doing his job. Still, I wish he would stop sucking up to the managers and just tell them to fuck off. I guess I’ll just walk back on my own.

It was a short walk, but I was still wary. I hated this area at night, especially since there have been reports of gang activity around this place. I didn’t think anything was going to happen to me, but then again I didn’t know. I started walking out of the restaurant into the darkness before me. Maybe this would all be okay. Maybe it would be easy for me and I could get to my car.

As soon as I walked out, I felt a presence. I turned around, and I saw a dark figure behind me. It smiled at me, making me feel weird. I didn’t trust that person, and I didn’t like the way things were looking. I had to get the hell out of here, even if it meant going in a different direction for a bit to throw the guy off.

I wasn’t too familiar with this area, but I knew that if I went east I would be able to get back to the park. I started walking that way, moving my body through the different alleyways. There had to be an open area around here, but as I continued to run I noticed it got darker and darker. I moved faster, and I could feel the other person following me just as quick. I didn’t know if I could outrun them. I really hoped I could.

It was then when it happened.

I slammed into a wall, causing a shocked feeling to course through my body. Oww. That fucking hurt.
